From 1 January 2011 onwards, bulb and garden-plant webshop www.flowerbulbsinc.co.uk will have a new owner. The new owner will be the 31-year-old Dutch Internet entrepreneur Sieger Koeman, who also owns the webshops www.degroenetas.nl (an online vegetable store) and www.fruitmandshop.nl (an online fruit-basket store). With this take-over he hopes to capitalise on the growth prospects in the online sale of bulbs and garden plants in the United Kingdom. “The English take their gardening very seriously,” according to the entrepreneur. Koeman has spent the past few months familiarising himself with the company and will take control from 1 January 2011 onwards. “I am really looking forward to this new challenge”.
www.flowerbulbsinc.co.uk is a webshop that targets experienced private gardening enthusiasts in the United Kingdom. The webshop was built in 2007 with assistance from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and its product range consists of around a thousand different varieties of bulbs and garden plants. Buyers can place orders of GBP 10 or more, after which the order will be shipped directly from the Netherlands. The company prides itself on “competitive product-pricing and high-quality products”.
In fact, the webshop is so successful at the moment that the company has the ambition to start shipping to eight different European countries in the not-too-distant future. This will demand the relevant expertise. “The reason for buying the company was precisely this international ambition,” said Koeman. His move should come as no surprise to outsiders: “The first money that I saved was earned by picking bulbs. Even then it was clear to me that I would have a future in bulbs”.
